On 22 June 2017, in Brussels, COFACE Families Europe attended the working seminar “Ensuring children’s rights in the context of deinstitutionalisation (DI) in Belgium” co-organised by Eurochild, the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) and the European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD). The objectives of the working seminar that took place in the framework of Eurochild’s Opening Doors campaign were fourfold:
- To share good practices from Belgium and other European countries on 3 identified advocacy priorities (DI for children under the age of three, for children with disabilities, in the context of inclusive education).
- To work on specific recommendations to the public authorities regarding the process of deinstitutionalisation (DI) in the context of Belgium.
- To gather contributions for the External Report that will be officially launched during the national seminar of European Expert Group on DI seminar in Belgium in autumn 2017 and will be further widely disseminated.
- To initiate the development of a coalition on alternative care for children in Belgium.
COFACE Families Europe works extensively both on the area of deinstitutionalization and inclusive education, therefore we welcomed the opportunity to discuss in detail the challenges and promising aspects of the recent inclusive education reform in Flanders.
