European Days of Persons with Disabilities, an occasion to celebrate diversity and social inclusion

COFACE Families Europe participated in two big events organised by EDF in collaboration with the European Commission and the European Parlement in the framework of the European Days of Persons with Disabilities.

On 4 and 5 December 2017, the European Disability Forum (EDF), in collaboration with the European Commission, organised an important conference to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year’s conference focused on citizenship and on a fairer social Europe “We are EU citizens”. EDF President, Yannis Vardakastanis referred to the European Pillar of Social Rights as a tool for the European Union to fulfil its commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

An important moment of the conference was the Ceremony of the Access City Award on the second day. This is the European prize that rewards cities for their efforts in becoming accessible to all. The awards were given to the representatives of the winning cities by the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen. The winner of 2018 Access City Award is: Lyon (France).

On 6 December 2017, EDF organised the 4th European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities in cooperation with the European Parliament. This event represents a unique opportunity for European citizens with disabilities, both leaders and grass-root activists, to have a dialogue with their elected representatives and speak up for their rights. The discussions focused on the right of persons with disabilities to vote and participate in political and public life, the European Disability Strategy 2020-2030 and the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) by the European Union (EU).
