On 19th May 2017, the 8th Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), organised by the European Commission took place in Brussels. Similarly to previous years, the event brought together stakeholders from the EU and Member States who take part in the implementation and monitoring of the CRPD, including policy makers and civil society organisations.
This year, the Work Forum focused on three important areas: how to assess disability in line with the human rights model of disability, how to put in practice the recommendations States Parties receive from the UN Committee on the rights of persons with disabilities and Article 11 of the Convention on the Protection of persons with disabilities in humanitarian situations in Europe. COFACE’s Policy and Advocacy Officer, Magdi Birtha was fulfilling the role of the rapporteur at this important event. Discussing common challenges and good practices is a great way to ensure that persons with disabilities and their families can enjoy their human rights on an equal basis with others.
The day before the Work Forum, Families Europe participated in the High Level Group meeting on Disability, organised by the European Commission.
