EU public consultation on cross-border families

Currently, parenthood established in one EU Member State may not be recognised in another. This can have significant adverse consequences for children when travelling or moving to another Member State and can endanger child’s rights derived from parenthood (e.g. on maintenance, or succession).

The Commission is consulting stakeholders to gather evidence on the problem definition and its consequences, and to provide an opportunity to all interested parties to give their views on the possible policy options and any other comment they may have on the initiative.

This initiative aims to ensure that parenthood, as established in one EU Member State, will be recognised across the EU so that children maintain their rights in cross-border situations, in particular when their families travel or move within the EU. The initiative does not aim to harmonise national laws on the establishment of parenthood.

You can contribute to this consultation by filling in the online questionnaire.

If you are unable to use the online questionnaire, please contact us using the email address: CNECT-DigitalPrinciples@ec.europa.eu

Questionnaires are available in some or all official EU languages. You can submit your responses in any official EU language.
