The European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) organized a High-Level Conference Sustainable Europe 2030: From Goals to Delivery. It was based on the premise that delivering on sustainable development is about more than ticking the boxes of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Taking the EU and the world on a sustainable path requires a change of perspective, turning risks into opportunities, and rethinking some of the key systems that underpin the way we live and work. Where does Europe stand and what are the key challenges and paradoxes it faces? What are best practices and areas for improvement? Which policies and initiatives are already delivering and where is further action required to implement a shift to a more sustainable socio-economic model? These are some of the questions that were addressed.
COFACE President, Annemie Drieskens, was present at the conference as member of the Multistakeholder platform on the implementation of the SDGs, and as member of the Jury for the European Sustainability Award. The European Sustainability Award aims to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals in the European Union by giving a human face to the efforts and creativity of European people, businesses and organizations, which are turning the global sustainable development goals into concrete solutions and opportunities. On the occasion of the conference, the Commission handed seven awards for seven creative and inspiring stories of European people, businesses and organisations who work towards contributing to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on its three main dimensions: environmental, economic and social. See the winners here. You can find more about the conference at #EU2030 and #SustainableEurope on social media, and find more information on the EPSC website.
Annemie Drieskens also took part in an International conference in Bucharest under the Romanian presidency of the EU on “2030 Agenda: Partnerships for Sustainable Development” where she presented the work of COFACE on the SDGs. The Conference addressed the governmental coordinators of the implementation of the Agenda 2030, from the European Union Member States, Eastern Partnership countries, Western Balkans countries, Central Asia countries, the EU representatives, the UN representatives and the civil society representatives. Ahead of the High Level Political Forum under ECOSOC in July and the SDG UN High Level Meeting in September 2019, the objective of the Conference was to share best practices in the implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, policy planning and sustainable development national strategies.
