In the context of the next steps for a sustainable European future, the European Commission created recently a SDG multistakeholder platform, and COFACE Families Europe participates in it. This platform is chaired by Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, meets once a year, and is supported by a management committee which meets at least three times a year. COFACE President Annemie Drieskens was appointed to the SDG platform and its management committee, which held its first meeting on 5th December 2017 in Brussels, facilitated by a team of the SecGen of the European Commission.
This platform is expected to become a vehicle for collectively and succesfully implementing the Sustainable development Goals , the so called UN 2030 Agenda , across the EU and beyond.
The multistakeholder platform brings together diverse partners who together are able to contribute to each of the 17 individual SDG Goals and exchange inspiring practices on SDG implementation. COFACE is actively involved in this platform and we will contribute especially in the field of SDG 1 no poverty, SDG 3 good health and well-being, SDG 4 quality education and SDG 5 gender equality. The multi-stakeholder platform should assist the European Commission in mainstreaming SDGs into all policy areas, thereby moving away from the sole focus on economic growth.
At its first meeting, the management committee discussed and agreed on 1) the vision, aims, objectives of the platform, 2) the priorities of the 2018 work programme and how these are linked to the different SDGs, 3)the recently published Eurostat report monitoring progress on the SDGs in Europe and 4) key channels for implementation of the SDGs. The next meeting will take place in January 2018.
