Update on COFACE actions on Work Life Balance – October 2017

The month of October has been a busy one on the Work Life Balance front. We saw institutional developments, contributed to a number of high-level events and launched the #IwantWorkLifeBalance campaign. This proves that the process for the adoption of the Work Life Balance Directive is ongoing and more and more people are expressing their interest and support, creating a spontaneous “Work-Life Balance community” that is constantly growing. With the discussion soon starting in the European Parliament on the text of the Directive, things will move even faster, please subscribe to our social media channels or contact us directly if you want more info or want to contribute to the movement.

Key actions this month:

  • October 11. Annemie Drieskens, COFACE Families Europe President, met in the European Parliament with EPP Chair MEP Weber, EPP Vice-Presidents MEP Grossetete and MEP Gonzalez Pons, EPP FEMM Coordinator MEP Kozloswka and EMPL Coordinator and rapporteur for the Work Life Balance Directive MEP Casa to discuss the importance of the directive for millions of families across the EU.
  • October 11. A delegation of COFACE members from Austria, Croatia and France participated in an expert workshop organised by the Committee of the Regions on the Territorial Impact Assessment of the proposed Work Life Balance measures.
  • October 17. Liz Gosme, COFACE Families Europe Director moderated a high level panel on Smart Work in the European Parliament, in an event organised by EPP Vice-President MEP Comi. See our policy brief on Smart Work.
  • October 17. Paola Panzeri, COFACE Families Europe Senior Policy Officer, intervened in a panel on the future of Gender Equality Law and on the link between working time and work-life balance, organised by the University of Warwick.
  • October 23. COFACE Families Europe launched the initiative #IwantWorkLifeBalance on social media while the EPSCO Ministers met in Luxembourg and agreed to the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights. This campaign, that will end with the adoption of the Work Life Balance directive, aims to give a space for people to express why legislation on Work Life Balance is needed. In less than a week, hundreds of people across Europe supported the campaign and shared their messages with the hashtag #IwantWorkLifeBalance, including Commissioner Vera Jourova, many MEPs, national media like the Belgian RTBF… among many others all around Europe.
  • October 25. We brought our messages to the Social Affairs Forum of EuroCities, in Gothenburg, Sweden where Paola Panzeri moderated a workshop on Work Life Balance. The workshop discussed the Commission’s work-life balance initiative and focused on the parts most relevant to cities, which is ensuring access to quality and affordable childcare, care for people with disabilities and other long-term care services.

Finally, with a number of partners of the civil society we hold regular monthly meetings to update one another and strategise. If you belong to a EU–wide civil society network and want to be more involved, or receive regular policy updates on this topic, contact Paola Panzeri at ppanzeri@coface-eu.org
