From 1997 to 1999, Fundação LIGA conducted an ESF funded study of its surrounding communities, and one of the main outcomes was the creation of a Senior Club in 1999. The Senior Club aims to promote active and integrated ageing in community life, encourage socialization, prevent isolation and social exclusion and to contribute to the physical, psychological and social well-being of its users.
The Club’s activities are very diversified, and range from cultural and recreational to volunteering and awareness. 94% of its 50 users believe that the Senior Club contributed to the improvement of their quality of life. This is the 25th year of activity of the Club and below you can see its members celebrating. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=384376852328691
The Club aims to enhance social connections and support of older people in the Lisbon area. Being a model that is easily replicable and very cost-effective, hopefully it can contribute to inspire the creation of more and better circumstances for the European Senior population. It was also among examples contained in a Eurofound report of 2018 on ‘local area dimensions of quality of life’.
