Press Dossier “The sexual violence against the integrity and freedom of women” regarding the ‘wolf pack’ rape case

The Association Salud y Familia has published a digital press dossier (in Spanish) on the occasion of the recent resolution of the Supreme Court on the case of the “wolf pack”. The dossier contains selected information and opinion articles on the topic.

Background:

During the San Fermín festival in Pamploma in 2016, a young woman was raped by a group of five men, self-proclaimed La Manada – “the Wolf Pack.”

After the attack, the victim pressed charges and the aggressors could be identified and arrested. Subsequently, the Provincial Court of Navarre and the Superior Court of Justice of Navarre judged them and, ultimately, in June 2019, the Supreme Court sentenced them to 15 years of prison.

The case sparked anger and protests by hundreds of thousands men and women in Spain, opening a broad and deep debate about harassments and macho aggressions against women. The media and the women’s movement not only followed the events, but, above all, critically revised the mainstream ethical principle that, in case of trials for gender-based violence, tends to focus the attention on the victim’s rather than on the aggressor’s behaviour. Meanwhile, other “Herds” hit again, also using social networks to embarrass and intimidate sexually active women.

The decision of the Supreme Court marked a before and an after by recognising the need for explicit consent for sexual relations, the fact that intimidation annuls the will of the victims and the oppressive circumstances that characterise any violation. However, many other action are still to be done in order to protect women in Spain, including the reform of sexual offences in the Penal Code, the full implementation of the Istanbul Convention on female genital mutilation; while anti-violence centres are still underfunded, sexual and emotional education is dysfunctional and territories where women risk harassment keep on existing in Spain’s cities and villages.

The Association Salud y Familia has considered that all this well deserves to be documented in real time, hence the edition of this press dossier with a selection of the main articles informing and reflecting on sexual violence and its consequences for the integrity and freedom of women.
