During its first breakfast event, the Right to Energy coalition declared in the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week that it was time for action to eradicate energy poverty. Earlier this year, COFACE Families joined the coalition, an alliance of unions, anti-poverty organisations and environmental NGOs, with the aim to fight energy poverty and defend the right to energy for all families in Europe.
Since its creation, the Right to Energy coalition has taken action to raise awareness among policy makers: On 12 September, the first event ‘How to achieve the right to energy for all Europeans’ took place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The coalition presented its principles based on the two pillars: ensuring the right to energy and increasing the renovation of building stock in Europe. In addition to Theresa Griffin (S&D), who hosted the event, Members of the European Parliament from the Greens and GUE/NGL attended the breakfast. All of them highlighted the urgent need to strengthen measures to eradicate energy poverty in the ‘Clean Energy Package For All Europeans’.
