On 1 June 2016, during the last internal meeting of the European Expert Group on the Transition from Institutional to Community-Based Care, COFACE Families Europe was appointed as co-chair of the Expert Group for the next year. We are delighted to take up this important role together with the European Network on Independent Living and Mental Health Europe.
The Expert Group on DI is a broad coalition gathering stakeholders representing people with care or support needs and their families, including children, people with disabilities, homeless people, people experiencing mental health problems; as well as service providers, public authorities and intergovernmental organisations. The Expert Group has an important role in supporting EU policy makers to develop laws and policies that advance deinstitutionalisation in Europe and to make a link with national, regional and local experts through the extensive membership of the network. The Expert Group through its different task forces contributes to successful DI in Europe, and it organises trainings and a platform to exchange knowledge and experiences, by bringing together European and National policy-makers, civil society organisations and other actors.
Advocating for inclusive communities lies in the heart of COFACE’s work. In order to ensure that all families can enjoy their family life in dignity, it is important to have in the communities available person-centred, quality and empowering models of services and promote formal and informal care that fully respect the human rights of all people with care or support needs. As co-chairs, COFACE will work hard to continue the promotion of deinstitutionalisation and the development of inclusive communities to make sure that persons with any kinds of support needs can participate and contribute to society.
The new co-chairs will have their first meeting on 4 July 2016 and we will keep you informed about the activities planned for 2016/17.
